Climate protection and adaptation are dominating the political agenda more than ever. The national climate adaptation strategy is being further developed, also in light of the 2021 flood disaster. Heat waves and heavy rainfall events are causing problems for residents, especially in urban areas, and pose major challenges to infrastructure.
The Climate Adaptation Act (KAnG), which came into force on July 1, 2024, sets a framework for the areas of action of heat prevention, health prevention and water infrastructure.
The law obligates states and municipalities to develop systematic and comprehensive climate adaptation strategies and concepts. These state-specific climate adaptation strategies must be developed by January 31, 2026, and updated every five years. States must also report on the progress of their climate adaptation concepts every two years.
