Tadaa! Premiere! Today I put my first YouTube video online and I'm so excited about it. I always love trying new things and figuring out the best way to communicate what I see. And this time it's in the format of a video!
Two weeks ago, I spent a few days on the Turracher Höhe in Carinthia. The weather was, shall we say, mediocre, but there was still plenty to experience. And I also really like it when the weather is simply wild and the world demonstrates its power to us. Because we humans have a strong tendency to always want to control and steer everything. And we often forget that this also has its limits. The consequences are floods, landslides, etc. Not every “safety measure” taken by humans, such as river straightening, is all good. And when the weather changes, we realize again how much energy there is in our natural cycles. A little more humility would do us good and certainly the world as well.
I would like to give another example of better adaptation: Icelanders firmly believe that nature should not be interfered with. For this reason, they do not dig roads into the mountainsides, but let them run along the slopes. They believe in trolls who then bring bad luck and throw stones onto the road, for example. An Icelander once told me this story on a joint excursion in 2011. And it stuck with me. So much for the power of nature.
Where were we? Oh yes, it was about the weather, which was really wild on the Turracher Höhe. It stormed again and again and many lifts were closed as a result. Nevertheless, we were able to go skiing for a few hours every day, as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing was a first for me because I had never done it before. And I imagined it would be much easier. As a former figure skater, skier and snowboarder, I thought it would be similar. But no, not at all. I hadn't done anything this difficult for a long time, but I also quickly realized that you make progress with a bit of practice. I think it will be a while before I can ride well and safely.
And I also had an action cam with me for the first time on this tour. I'd wanted to try one out for a while, as I've always felt uncomfortable skiing with a cell phone in my hand and it's also difficult to hold. It was much easier with the actioncam and it was really fun to press the button every now and then and spontaneously record something. Nothing in the video is planned, but I think it's a nice story and you can see what the few days were like.
I had so much fun filming and editing that this will definitely not be the last video. We'll see what direction it goes in next. I think the best results always come when you don't plan too much and follow your creative impulses. That's also how the video came about spontaneously!
I hope you have lots of fun with it and that it inspires you. It is important to me to keep showing you the great opportunities nature offers us to immerse ourselves in it and thus strengthen our connection to our environment. Because we need that if we want to shape our future and that of our society in a positive way!
Create Change, Katharina
